Can you believe there even is such a thing? A bit niche but I am looking forward to heading out to Chamonix to find out all the latest research pertinent to my line of work. Its a great chance to collaborate and meet up and I might even find my way up a mountain or…

Four hills
Lovely little 40 miler. Getting into the season proper now. Generally slow but 4 big hills – what about that Cleeve hill and the descent into Wrington! An amazing apex. Highly recommended. Currently no injuries. Check out my ride on Strava: https://www.strava.com/activities/1586684349/shareable_images/map_based?hl=en-US&v=1526914639
Nourishing the human psyche
Having a tip top day in London at Photo London and The Tate – makes a change from running/cycling/climbing (I’m a big fan of nourishing all aspects of the human psyche). Interestingly I’ve noticed a few things about art; I’m not a big fan of landscape pictures despite loving landscapes. Bigger is not better. Happening…
Watch “Rotator Cuff Shoulder Pain: Exercise is as effective as surgery.” on YouTube
Ok, so I’ve just attended a meeting with Sports and Orthopaedic Consultants who delved deeply into the stats behind this study and feel that sub-acromial decompressions have been unfairly maligned; they do work, mostly. Are you strong enough?
For strong, read ‘robust’. Climbing, more than most sports reverses (or at least alters) the tensile loads going through the body. Bones, used to absorbing compression forces are suddenly being stretched and bent and twisted. Ligaments are being pulled on – all the time! And muscles are being asked not to move but to hold…

How not to learn to ski….
I’m in my last day in Alta in the north of Norway, watching fresh snow come down and contemplating an easy day. Yesterday I “acquired” Skiers Thumb, the day before I landed on by backside so hard that I’m still struggling to sit comfortably and I ache all over. Still nothing broken and me and…
How not to organise an expedition …
At a youthful 44 years old I decided to learn to ski. Inspired by the story of the Telemark Heroes, British Norwegian Special Forces in WWII who parachuted onto the Hardangervidda plateau, survived by eating moss for a couple of months before blowing up a power station thus reducing the Nazi’s race to develop nuclear…
